ROOTS – Rallying Our Offspring To Serve

It occurred to me about a year ago that I can't let busy get in the way of teaching my kids the importance of serving and loving Jesus. I was filling myself, but my kids weren't involved and I just felt like it was super important to get them involved.

Vicki:
I’m Vicky, and this is Casey and we have started a service organization named ROOTS. ROOTS stands for Rallying Our Offspring To Serve, and ROOTS is based on the scripture. Ephesians 3:17, which says, “Our roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.” It occurred to me about a year ago that I can’t let busy get in the way of teaching my kids the importance of serving and loving Jesus. I was filling myself by going to church and Tuesday night Bible study, and serving in multiple ministries at school. But my kids weren’t involved and I just felt like it was super important to get them involved. I was having teachable moments out of anger, like when my kids were complaining, and I was trying to tell them, “You should be thankful and you should be grateful for all of these things you do have.”

But you know what? I was never exposing them to why I wanted them to be thankful and why I wanted them to be grateful. And so all these different service projects that we’re able to do, we are able to, and then we’re able to reference back at some point, “Hey, do you remember when we did this?” And to bring a situation to light, and when they’ve been exposed and they’ve actually been, they’ve been hands-on, they’re able to understand, okay it just makes a little more sense instead of me just telling them they should be thankful or they should be grateful.

Casey:
I’m Casey. Vicky and I are in Tuesday night Bible study together and I remember when she came in and just started talking about this idea she had and she had these flyers that are so cute with the ROOTS and she was talking about what ROOTS was.

And I just remember her sharing and I got chills because I’m like, this is exactly what I have wanted, something like this that I could do with my family.

Vicki:
I had this thought, I just had this burning desire to find a way that I could serve with my kids. And I wasn’t exactly sure what that was going to look like. So we never intended for this to be anything more than, “Hey, let’s get a couple of families together, let’s serve together.” I realized, wow, there’s a lot of families that feel the same way that we felt.

Casey:
I have an eight-year-old, a seven-year-old, and a two-year-old and life is crazy. I mean, I don’t always have time to be intentional like I should. And I just, I loved the thought about ROOTS. It’s like you have a Bible verse, something that we really, a ministry that we pair up with and then it’s like one day we have a rally day once a month and I mean we do stuff that I can have my two-year-old come to and he’s just going to grow up doing that.

Vicki:
So the service project that we did at the assisted living facility was a no-sew type blanket and it was tying the knots, tying the blankets together and it just really resembled the older generation and the younger generation tying themselves together. And it was just an awesome, awesome afternoon. It’s just so good to keep your kids just involved and your family involved and being able to to serve like this as a family. It’s super simple. Loving God, loving others, serving others, and if ROOTS helps provide that tool for other families to walk with us along this journey, then we’re just excited and super grateful.
