Above All...There is no substitute for thorough planning and being well-prepared. Remember kids are very open to God so use every opportunity and be intentional about teaching them.

Let kids be kids...Don't expect perfection. They'll disappoint you every time! They are not going to act like adults. Being a kid is not a terminal disease that needs a cure. It's perfectly normal behavior.

Your voice...is a teaching tool. Use words and tone of voice which will help the child feel confident and reassured. The most effective speech is soft or medium, simple, direct and slow.

Provide a consistent...set of limits within your classroom. Older children may help establish these. Make sure they are well communicated at all age levels.

Provide positive reinforcement...often for desired good behavior. Avoid blaming words.

Avoid disciplining measures...in front of the entire group. It's best to deal with discipline in a personal straightforward way. Don't ignore a problem - work at correcting it in a positive way. Influence through relationships - avoid power maneuvers.

Choices...are helpful when appropriate. Example:  "You may sit in the circle or at the table. Your choice."

When limits are necessary...be clear and consistent. Children feel more secure with adults who take the responsibility of setting necessary limits.

If 2 warnings...have not worked, then provide a time out chair. (One minute per age of child is a fair expectation). This period of time will be different for each age group. Preschoolers usually respond well to a "think it over" time with a short teacher conversation before rejoining the class. Elementary children need to consider how they could have handled the situation differently and share that with the teacher when they are to return to class.

At no time...is it appropriate to strike a child.

Try to lead...by example. When it's time to be quiet, use a quieter voice.

Retain your sense of humor...Laugh and joke frequently during your teaching time.
